VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are looking for TWO enthusiastic, friendly and independent volunteers to help with tonight’s event. Shifts last 30 to 60 minutes, and volunteers are welcome to attend the presentation once their volunteering is complete!

Setup: This role will help the W+P Coordinator set up the hall for the event, including arranging chairs, starting the coffee pot, and putting out snacks. Must be able to jump in where you see help is needed!

Greeter: This role will help the W+P Coordinator greet and check-in all registrants. Sitting at the door, you are the first face people will see when they enter the hall. Please make them feel welcome, find their name on the list, and invite them to grab a snack before taking their seat.

Using props, visuals and Ritchie’s own flora and fauna, this presentation will teach you about:

• What species are present in our area (both plants and animals)

• The role each species plays in the ecosystem and how they depend on one another

• How to peacefully coexist with wildlife and how to have healthy interactions

• What to do if you encounter an injured, ill or orphaned animal

• What we can do everyday in our own backyards to help wildlife, promote biodiversity, and support a healthy ecosystem!

HEALTHY BACKYARDS

It is more important than ever for us to understand the impact our actions have on the environment, and it starts within our communities. The Healthy Backyards program helps educate our members and guests about the positive impact they can have on our wild neighbours and the ecosystem with small changes and knowledge-sharing.

From keeping communities free of litter to planting native vegetation and reducing pesticide use, there are countless ways our communities can help ensure the health of local wildlife and the environment. These concepts can be daunting, but if we start small—in our own backyards—we can make a huge impact together.

Healthy Backyards is a one-hour-long, free, environmental education program designed specifically for community leagues and their members. The program is customized to each neighbourhood and its greenspaces.

Crafternoon is a low barrier way to spend some time creating for you, in a friendly and safe environment, with rad folks who also love crafting.

On Saturday, May 10th the Ritchie Volunteers will take on the litter in Mill Creek! Come and join us.

As all Ritchie neighbours know, we love our local creek for early morning runs, playing with family, and exploring with our pups. We are all also familiar with the amount of garbage it accumulates over the winter.

Come lend a hand in our annual spring cleanup to help tidy up Mill Creek Ravine so we can all continue to enjoy it!

Area of focus: west side of the ravine from Whyte Ave to 72 avenue

• Come to the hall for the snacks before and after the event.

• Enter to win a $40 United Cycle gift card! and other great prizes (draws happen at 2pm).

• The league has some supplies to share, including garbage bags, gloves, and grabbers. Pick those up at the hall before you head out. We’ll have volunteers hanging out all afternoon.

• Please dispose of all garbage properly in your personal garbage bin. Do not leave it in the ravine.

This is a one-time showcase of young talent! It’ll be a 4-song set of covers but with a full band (~7pm) then it’ll quiet down for the remainder of the night.

Dreaming of Fireflies: Native Plant Workshop

Ready to rewild your yard? During this workshop while we sow native seeds with our hands, explore native biodiversity that may visit your yard, understanding the history and consequences of the removal of native plants. You’ll be provided practical maintenance tips and seasonal best practices for supporting our ecosystem.

Our goal is for all attendees to leave feeling curious and engaged, and ready to take action and educate others on how we as a community can work together to sustain the fireflies, birds, and bees.

This workshop will provide attendees with resources to start native plants in their backyard. Along with these resources, there will be discussions on:

• History of agriculture in Alberta and its environmental impacts

• Benefits of native plant garden and best practices for garden maintenance

• Bingo card for identifying native insects that may visit your yard

Attendees are encouraged to collect their (clean) recycling and bring them to use them as plant pots. For example: to-go containers, eggs cartons, tubes of toilet paper, berry containers, and meat packaging containers.

Elliot Rose is an artist and founder of Instapressionism, a movement that distills everyday moments into simplified expressions of form and sensation. “I am an amateur photographer and amateur naturalist. I was born and raised on a south-east Saskatchewan farm where some native prairie surrounding the farm thanks to road allowances and some native pasture land where native flowers grew. I worked for Environment Canada, Weather Services for over 35 years. I retired in 2006 and have volunteered extensively since then, doing the annual Elk Island flower count almost every year since retiring. I took the Edmonton city Master Naturist program in 2014 and have been participating with the Edmonton Native Plant Society ever since.”

Patrick now grows over 60 different native plants and shrubs in this yard!

This youth empowerment workshop focuses on preparing youth for the job market and will cover areas including: resume writing, positive traits, power words, best practices, and drafting a sample resume.

The session will also include introduction to job searches, writing a cover letter, interview preparation, and dressing for the job. Ideal for youth 18 to 25 years old.

IN THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL:

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Okama Brook is a volunteer with the Ritchie Community League. She is a capability building, organizational development, community engagement and social mobilization expert. She is the founder of the ACHA, a not for profit organization that supports youth, women and indigenous people's initiatives. In her previous job at Goodwill Industries of Alberta as a Child & Youth Resource Specialist, she developed resources that helped connect youth and families to sustainable livelihoods. She is an ethnocultural performing artist, mother of three thriving teenagers, and serves on several community boards.

Learn how to identify skills, build relationships, and tap into creativity that helps you respond in an emergency, so that when a crisis hits you are equipped to navigate it, even when you don't have an emergency kit on hand!

THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU IF: ​

• ​Want to learn how to BUILD RELATIONSHIPS with community members in order to prepare a more collective and inclusive emergency plan.

• You want to IMPLEMENT SKILLS to hold yourself through the hard times, and action even during overwhelm.

• You want to know WHAT YOU CAN OFFER in an emergency, because you haven't seen examples of neurodiverse or people with disabilities helping in an emergency.

• You get anxious when you think that you might be caught in an emergency  without your emergency kit.

AND YOU DON'T JUST WANT TO SURVIVE A DISASTER, you want to take collective action to address the policies that do nothing to prevent them, and build a world where the you, and the environment, can thrive.

Come learn about the City of Edmonton’s Neighbouring for Climate program and meet other climate-conscious folks from Ritchie, Hazeldean, Argyll and King Edward Park!

This 2-hour in-person event is an opportunity to help build local solutions, meet your neighbours, and uncover the resilient resources of our community.

Using worksheets, prompts, and a small group format, we will be brainstorming ideas for some of the Neighbouring for Climate cards. These plans will help our communities tackle climate change on a super local level.

THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR PEOPLE WHO:​

• are passionate about super local climate solutions

• received a Neighbouring for Climate toolkit from the City, but aren’t sure where to start

• want to learn more about the Neighbouring for Climate toolkit

• want to meet likeminded neighbours

• love talking positively about climate stuff!

All ages, experience and knowledge levels are welcome…and wanted! We need all voices and backgrounds contributing to the plans and community-centered solutions. If you have specific expertise in an area, we would love to know in advance.

We will have some simple activities for your kids if this would help encourage your attendance, but no direct “babysitter”. There will also be some simple snacks free of most allergens to keep us fueled for the afternoon!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

We need ONE volunteer to help out tonight. You will be responsible for welcoming attendees and checking their registration. This role is perfect for people who are friendly, independent, and a clear communicator. French-speaking is a bonus, but not a requirement.

Build a personalized collage answering the question WHO AM I? Our expert instructor will help you incorporate community connections in your collage, and build some new ones too!

• Magazines, books, flyers for collage materials

• Mod Podge, glue sticks

• Scissors

• Worksheet to help you zone in on your values, unique characteristics, and community connections

• Supportive and knowledgable instructions

• Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages

WHAT TO BRING

Most of the supplies are provided (included in the cost of the workshop), but here are some extras you can bring for your comfort.

• A water bottle or cup for hydration

• Mask for safety

• Sweater or layers - it can get drafty in our hall!

• Magazines or books you would like to share with the class!

BARTER OPTION

If $10 is out of your budget right now, never fear! We have a barter option available for admission. If you select that when checking out, Lisa will contact you in advance to make arrangements for your barter offering. Some popular options are:

• contribute a box of cookies or package of tea to the snack table

• donate tools or other supplies

• volunteer for set up or at the welcome table - for Ritchie Community League members only

Here are some examples of the style and design we’ll be practicing in the workshop.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Lisa loves all arts and craft media, but is a papercrafter at heart. She has been teaching scrapbooking and multi-media art for 10+ years, and is a published scrapbooker. She loves helping her students break out of their comfort zone!

ABOUT NOT LADYLIKE COMMUNITY

This workshop is presented alongside Ritchie neighbour Not Ladylike Community. Their mission is is to bring folks together, to build community care and resilience, and offer a reliable "third space" in a time where those options are lacking. Ritchie Community League is excited to welcome the folks from Paths for People to our hall to discuss active transportation, and provide context to current and future civic projects in our neighbourhood.

PATHS FOR PEOPLE

Paths for People traces part of its foundation to a community league group working on getting more bike infrastructure in their neighbourhood. Yay community leagues! In 2015, the group was formalized as Paths for People, and expanded their mandate to cover all forms of active transportation across the city. They strive to help Edmonton become a multi-modal city where active transportation is a safe, accessible, year-round option for all.

They have 5 main goals:

• Promote safe, accessible, enjoyable active transportation for all

• Advocate for active-transportation infrastructure, policy and leading practices

• Bust active-transportation myths

• Foster community and relationships with allies

• Grow a diverse, engaged and inclusive membership

Join New Grocery Movement and the West Ritchie Community Garden for another exciting canning workshop - this time, on jalapeño jelly. Our resident canning expert and league member, Ash, will be walking us step by step through the canning process. We'll provide all the instructions and supplies, and you'll walk away with your own jar of jalapeño jelly!

Our exclusive 2025 merch is ready to go and we can’t wait to get it into the deserving hands of our Ritchie Crew. But we need your help on December 8th to assemble and deliver all of that sweet sweet swag to our subscribers across the community.

There are two shifts up for grabs, depending on your abilities and availability:

• 10am - 12pm: assemble the goody bags at the hall

• 12 - 1:30pm: door to door delivery in Ritchie

Sign up to volunteer to deliver Ritchie Merch throughout the neighbourhood. 

Crafternoon is an opportunity to hang out with likeminded crafters and work on your projects, maybe get some tips, and definitely get inspired!

Bring your favourite craft supplies or a project on the go. We'll set you up at a table, and you can craft the afternoon away! There will be snacks, and friends new and old. Admission is "pay what you can", and this event is open to members and non-members of Ritchie.

Registration guarantees you a friendly reminder email a few days out, but is otherwise no obligation. Things come up, we get it!

Crafternoon is a low barrier way to spend some time creating for you, in a friendly and safe environment, with rad folks who also love crafting.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

• Any and all type of crafts and crafters.

• Folks who are looking for a craft community, and who value safe and accessible spaces.

• Crafters who want to get some work done on a project while they make a new friend.

• Heads up: Your photo might be taken to use in future Ritchie Community League and NLL marketing. Please inform a volunteer immediately if you have any concerns.

WHAT TO BRING

• A mask; these are required in the crafting space to help keep us all safe

• Your own supplies or project to work on. We do not provide materials or instruction.

• Arts and crafts supplies for our Swap Table! You are welcome to take items from the table, even if you didn't bring any. Anything leftover at the end of the day will be donated to the Reuse Centre.

• We are an environmentally minded Community League, so we ask that you bring your own refillable water bottle or cup.

• Cash or card, "pay what you can" admission is payable by either at the door (minimum $5).

Tonight’s presentation will focus on downsizing and decluttering.

We will be sharing strategies to downsize with ease! Our professional organizer will cover the 5 stages of organizing, tips for decluttering with confidence and how to rehome your old treasures.

PRESENTER BIO

My name is Shannon Foster. I am the Senior Organizing Consultant at Sort & Simple Professional Organizing. At Sort & Simple we assist overwhelmed families, busy professionals and seniors that are downsizing. We have a focus on sustainability and enjoy helping our clients repurpose and donate their items.

Volunteer needed

We need one volunteer for tonight’s presentation! If you have great social skills and attention to detail, we would love for you to you host our welcome table. This role ensures all attendees feel welcome and know the logistics of the evening, after you log their registration upon entry.

Time: 1 hour

Accessibility: Sitting, reading, writing and speaking English. Additional languages - especially French - are a bonus, but not required.
